IEC LMIA-Exempt Permit – Youth Mobility Agreement
If you're participating in International Experience Canada (IEC), there's more to your work permit than just an approval letter. Behind it lies R204(d) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR)—the legal authority that allows Canada to issue LMIA-exempt work permits under Youth Mobility Agreements (YMAs).
As of January 2025, all IEC permits—whether for Working Holiday, Young Professionals, or International Co-op—fall under this updated regulation. R204(d) reflects Canada’s commitment to reciprocal international opportunities for youth, ensuring your work experience in Canada is recognized as part of a formal exchange, not as standard foreign labor.
Understanding this regulation helps clarify why your application is streamlined, and why IEC is a powerful stepping stone for those planning to gain Canadian experience and, potentially, transition to permanent residency.
