Global Talent Stream

Category A and Category B GTS

Introduction

Looking to fast-track top international talent? Under Canada’s Global Talent Stream, employers can expect:

  • Rapid LMIA decisions: Receive a positive or negative outcome in 10 business days (80% of applications) from the first business day after submission
  • Dedicated application support: Guidance every step of the way from Temporary Foreign Worker Program officers
  • Expedited work permits: Once your LMIA is approved, IRCC processes work permits in 10 business days (80% of cases)

To access these accelerated benefits, employers choose the path that best fits their needs—either Category A for unique, specialized roles or Category B for in-demand occupations:

Category A Innovative Canadian companies can fast-track unique, specialized talent through Category A of the Global Talent Stream. To qualify, you must be referred by one of ESDC’s designated referral partners and demonstrate that the position:

  • Requires truly unique and specialized skills essential to scale your business
  • Commands at least $38.46 per hour ($80,000 annual) or the prevailing wage—whichever is higher
  • Demands advanced industry knowledge, a specialized degree, and a minimum of 5 years’ experience
  • Is limited in scope (typically 1–2 positions per year) due to the rarity of the skill set

Category B For in-demand roles with proven domestic shortages, Category B welcomes applications for occupations on ESDC’s Global Talent Occupations List. Eligible employers must:

  • Offer the prevailing wage for the occupation (hourly and annual)
  • Hire for one of the listed NOC 2021 codes (e.g., computer systems managers, engineers, data scientists)
  • Demonstrate the need for highly skilled temporary foreign workers where Canadian supply is insufficient
